Information about the research

We are looking for a talented postdoctoral fellow (PDF) willing to contribute with new skills and ideas in the field of the synthesis and development of a new membranes and electrodes for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC).

Motivation and an independent way of working are desired skills. The available position is funded by the Centre of Excellence on Architectures Materials (CEMAM) and the PDF will be involved in a Franco –Canadian project  (NSPEM, coordinated by Dr. Cristina Iojoiu, France and Prof. Steven Holdcroft, Canada ) involving 4 academic partners (Laboratory of Electrochemistry and Physico-Chemistry of Material and Interfaces (LEPMI) and CEA Grenoble from France and the Departments of Chemistry (SFU-DC) and Physics (SFU-PC) from Simon Fraser University Canada as well as 2 industrial partners (Eras labo from France and AFCC (Automotive Fuel Cell Corporation) from Canada. The PDF will carry on their research activity, in material elaboration and characterization, at LEPMI and 3-6 months at SFU (AFC) to be trained in fuel cell fabrication and analysis.

Major responsibilities

The PDF is expected to lead a project focused on the development of new nano-structured copolymers for proton conducting membranes and electrodes. This will be done under the joint guidance of Dr. Cristina Iojoiu (LEPMI, CNRS-France) and Prof. Steven Holdcroft (SFU, Canada), although the PDF is expected to take lead of the project and contribute with innovative thinking. The project involves aspects of nano-structured copolymers design and synthesis, membranes elaboration and characterization (mainly morphological characterization by microscopic and small angle scattering techniques, proton diffusion, ionic conductivity, water sorption, etc.), and performance tests (e.g., thermo-oxidative stability and fuel cell tests). Communication of the achieved results at regular group meetings, as well as at national and international conferences and through high-quality papers, is also a responsibility of the PDF.

Position summary

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+0.5 max. 1).

Qualifications
The PFD is expected to hold a PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science.  The successful candidate will be interested in learning to use diverse experimental methods including NMR spectroscopy, diffusion NMR, dynamic mechanic analysis, microscopy, small angle scattering, and vapor sorption.

The candidate will primarily deal with the design of new ionomers and membrane elaboration and characterization which are central aspects in this project. The candidate is thus expected to have strong competences in one or more of the mentioned activities or experimental methods, but also to have skills in the analytical interpretation of the experimental data. Excellent command of the English language is also required. In addition, to be successful in this position the candidate needs to be highly motivated, to have an innovative way of thinking, and an ability to be independent but still enjoy working in a larger team.

Application procedure
The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below (in English):

  1. Application:

− CV, include complete list of publications
− Two references that we can contact.

  1. Personal letter/Qualifications:

− 1-3 pages where you introduce yourself and present your qualifications.
