M Pedro Von Hohendorff Seger will present his thesis "Modélisation sous Incertitudes et Management Énergétique de Batteries Li-ion de Seconde Vie".
Abstract :
Currently, the electric vehicle market is developing very rapidly in France and Europe and the notion of resource circularity must be addressed urgently. The Li-ion batteries used in these vehicles are high-tech and high-value, with high production costs and emissions. As these batteries are often replaced when they reach about 80% of their initial capacity, extending their life is a way to get a better return on this initial cost and emissions.
This thesis is dedicated to the study of so-called second life applications for Li-ion batteries. The main scientific issues identified and addressed in this work are related to the limitations of existing models - especially in terms of uncertainties, which become more important with aging - and a sizing and management strategy to better integrate these second life batteries in real applications.
Two models are proposed in this work to properly characterize these batteries. First, we parameterize a cell voltage response model, allowing to evaluate the evolution of parameters such as internal resistance with aging. We also study the transition from a "cell" model to a "pack" model and the ensuing propagation of uncertainties. Then, we propose a cycling aging model for these batteries, again with uncertainties and a study of their propagation. To this model we associate a cycle counting algorithm, constituting a tool capable of estimating the aging in second life according to the real conditions of use. We use this tool to optimize the sizing and management of a microgrid integrating a stationary second-life battery, while evaluating the impact on its lifetime. This work provides the methodological framework to integrate second life batteries in new applications.
