The aim of this study is to understand the influence of the membrane electrode assembly (or MEA) interfaces properties on the mechanical behavior of PEMFCs, using the development of a numerical model. The in-plane elastic orthotropic properties and nonlinear out-of-plane properties of the gas diffusion layers will be considered in the numerical model. Numerical results suggest that it is possible to limit the plastic deformation of the PEM by controlling its assembly mode, as well as the properties at the MEA interfaces, considered as bonded or free. Different recommendations are then proposed to increase the durability of PEMFCs by limiting the amplitude of mechanical strains or stresses in their core.
